(In the production of our trailer, there may be different shots and scenes added due to us needing more scenes to improve our trailer, or shots may not being included because of us not needing)
Camera angles and movements, that are not usually seen. The camera is canted most of the time to make the audience feel what the characters are feeling, there is a use of bright lighting and different colours to show the mood of the scene. This would be useful in our product that we are making.
The editing techniques used for him having a nightmare, the different camera angles and things happening in the scene that could be useful for our product.
The use of mirrors is common in psychological thrillers and we would like to include them in Ebony's hallucinations.

What is your favourite production company name?-
Answer: DANSEAL PICTURES
What is the name that best fits the genre we have chosen, psychological thriller?-
Answer: CDL PICTURES
Do you think the designs look professional, if so which one?
Answer: By looking at the 4 pictures, i feel that the 2nd one looks the most professional due to the writing and picture used not being cartoony or comic which benefits the group because of it looking genuine and real for the 'audience'. The colours used also match each other so it doesn't look all over the place.
Do you think they look convincing and real?
Answer: Out of the 4, the 2nd and 3rd look the most convincing and real. From the audience point of view i think that the 3rd and 4th will look the best.

What is the name that best fits in with the genre we have chosen, psychological thriller?
Answer: CDL PICTURES
Do you think the designs look professional, if so which one?
Answer: I think the 3rd one out of the 4, because the type of picture is used in real production companies and the shape of the logo is different to a square which could be boring.
Do you think they look convincing and real?
Answer: The 2nd and 3rd out of the 4 due to them looking the best.
There are many names we have thought of for our production company names, we wanted it to be unique and rememberable so that the audience would be more interactive and see the next film 'made by us'. Some Examples:
LANSEA PRODUCTIONS
GREY PIGEON PRODCUTIONS
GBP PRODUCTION
BELLEINI PICTURES
CDL PICTURES
GRAY STUDIOS
DANGRAY PRODUCTIONS
DANSEAL PICTURES
CHELSAN STUDIOS
Also with the logo of our production company it also needs to be unique and rememberable so we stand out from the other shown in the adverts before the film etc, here are some that we may use:
With the masthead on my front cover i wanted to make it memorable and unique with the font and also the colours. I feel like i challenged the masthead of usual conventions because of it being a unique name and me using the colour pink but also spelling it like MUZIK instead of MUSIC to make it more modern because of the audience i chose. But i feel in some ways i feel that i followed the conventions because of be erasing the masthead to have the artists in front of the masthead because they are the main focus. On the front cover i used a bright colour scheme to attract the audience which when i did my research most magazine front covers used to suit the genre of music. With the masthead also i learnt that the audience don't generally need to see the masthead because they know already what the magazine is called and are used to the masthead, and this helped me want to make my masthead more unique, bright and colourful. Because of my front cover having to appeal to both genders i used a mixture of colours so it can apply to both male and female audiences but also wanted my magazine to look unisex and to not focus on just females. Another component i used from the conventions of a realistic front cover is a plug, these are usually used to attract the audience more but also to inform them in competitions and prices to be won i used two which had different shaped and colours to contrast on the front cover. I also made my layout typical to a front cover magazine by this i added more cover lines to make it look busy but placed them professionally around the front cover so the audience can still see the main image but still be informed by the cover lines around the image. The cover lines were all also in white and bright colours so they stand out and not clash with the main image so the audience can see them clearly and making it more eye catching but the colours also to stand out and appeal to both audiences (male and female). I also included other typical conventions to make my magazine look even more realistic e.g. Date, Issue, Bar-Code and Price.

The name of the magazine (usually in the corner or at the bottom)
I also used small images of the artists to show the audience who the magazine is focused on. It helps that the contents page includes the main artists because of the audience wanting to see, but also something for them to get excited about to read. Another component that i used was unusual font to make the contents page look fresh, but also to match the other products and to look professional. With the contents page images i made them black and white, this is because in colour i thought it would look to busy due to the bright colour scheme, i think it made it look unique because most contents pages don't involve black and white images. Also in two of the images i erased the background to match my front cover, i think this added some texture to it because of it all not being just 'square' and 'blocky', i thought this was effective but it could of been improved due to the outline being messy and UN-neat. With the information included to what is on the different pages, i included 'fashion' and 'tunes' so it can appeal to both audiences more, by having different sections to my magazine i think it made a difference between the others just focusing on the music side and not involving other components. I think i challenged the conventions of a contents page regarding the colour and artists, even though including female artists as the main focus i don't think it helped my magazine to look unisex especially with the colour scheme, (pink, different shades of purple) i think if i used more unisex colours like green or blue it would appeal to both audiences more. My Front Cover- Conventions used, developed and challenged on my front coverFor my magazine front cover i included many things. The components i used for my front cover was a masthead, headline, main image, bar code, price and many more. I used a main image on the front cover where the artists where looking at the camera to use a direct address to the audience but also to draw them into 'reading or buying' the magazine. Another component i included was the price, date and bar code which are the main conventions that every front cover had due to them informing the audience about the magazine, i also did this to make my magazine front cover look more realistic. By making a magazine i had to choose a music genre but also what artists i was going to include, I chose house music because it is my favorite type of music and i think it would of helped me in the long run because i know what the artists are like and what they are perceived to be. I think with my main image i challenged the conventions of a front cover due to the fact that i used woman on a house music magazine front cover and most of the industry are male which helped my magazine look unique to the others. By using women on the front cover i think it would appeal to both the genders more than using a male because woman tend to usually be interested in woman artists opposed to men but also i think men would be more open to both sexes on a front cover because its different seeing woman. Conventions of a Contents PageMy Contents Page- Conventions used, developed and challenged on a Contents Page There are also many conventions to a contents page, these include page numbers, small images and also a contact information. I included all of these things due to wanting to make it look more realistic. On my contents page i used a web address just like my front cover but didn't include it on the double page spread because i didn't think it was a relevant as the other two. I also used a title in a distorted layout due to it being similar to other contents pages as it makes it look more modern and fresh, i also kept in with the colour scheme of my magazine by using purples and faded the colours from dark to light to have a contrast between the other components on the contents page. I also used the colour scheme with the underlines of the titles and also included my masthead at the bottom which is in pink to keep in with the 'theme'. By doing this it made my magazine look professional and clear to the audience that it had a link between all of the products (front cover, double page spread and contents page). My Double Page Spread- Conventions used, developed or challenged
The first thing on i used on my double page spread was a main image, this was of the main artists that are included on the contents page and front cover. I used a filter to make the image look bright and in colour. I used a quote from the artists to show the audience a 'snippet' of what they have to say, this is also effective and used with other real magazines because of it being on of the first things the audience reads to carry on looking at the column. I also followed the conventions of using columns in my writing but i feel like i challenged this because of having two paragraphs above as an introduction, in bigger and bold writing. I used a banner in the corner of my double page spread to inform the audience that this 'column' was exclusive to make it more exciting for the audience to read. I also continued the colour scheme that i had used throughout to match it to the other products i had made but also to make it look organised and professional. I think the colour scheme helped because it being about female artists and i think it matched the column instead of using 'boyish' colours. I continued the font throughout all the products to make it look professional but could be improved due to it being to small and difficult to read for the audience. On my double page spread i made changes to make it look realistic. I changed the image filter to colour instead of black and white to add more colour, i included more columns so the reader could engage more, I included a page number and a quote on the image to make it look more appealing. I also made 'DL' in big letters to show the audience who the main focus is but to also make it look more exciting and appealing to read other than a boring title (I included 3 titles). I made my double page spread look more busy and professional even though minor components could be improved. I kept things some components the same like the title, fading from a dark purple to a light so it would make my magazine more unique from other real products. I used a question and answer in my columns because that is what most audiences like to see in a column or double page spread because it is actually what the artists said themselves and not wrote by someone else. I think overall my double page spread was successful but i would have improved more components to make it look better (the main image being myself, the font being to small and thin, the colours used)
What I would do differently and improve....
The first thing that i would change is the models for my magazine, i used myself and it made me conscious of my product but also thinking it looked worse than it did. I would think more about my colour scheme appealing to the genre of the music but especially the audience. Another thing that i would change is the colour on my masthead being pink, i don't think it really helped me choosing a colour scheme because it looked good with girly colours. Another component i would change is the genre being house music, i regret doing this genre because of the conventions and images etc being so hard to apply, i would have chose to do R&B or Pop. I would have changed my font throughout due to it being a problem on the double page spread being difficult to read and i don't think it suited my products. The last thing i would change is the images, i used different filters and colours on the images and it think overall it made my magazine look tacky with the colour scheme and other components.
This is my final front cover for my music magazine product, i used meany elements that you would usually see in a front cover. With this i did research into real media products to make mine look realistic as it could. By doing this i included a main image, a masthead, cover lines and realistic components you would usually see like a bar code, date and price.
Strengths of my Front Cover
The masthead that i chose to use is similar to other mastheads on realistic magazine products. I used big bold font with a pop of color to attract the audience to 'buying my magazine'. With this it is also being the main image to make it look even more realistic because it is all about the artists on the front cover also the first thing the audience notices.
Using bold, bright colors for the cover lines on the magazine to attract the audience by reading the 'information' and making the magazine front cover exciting for the audience to read.
The main image s in front of the masthead to make it look more realistic because most front cover i looked at had the masthead behind the artists cause they are the main focus.
When making the magazine product i used colors that all linked together to make it look professional but changed my mind by the end with using bright colors to attract the audience to make them want to read more.
Weaknesses of my Front Cover
For my main image i was self conscious because i used my self and didn't think it looked very good.
By using so many different bright colors i think it made my front cover look tacky and unprofessional even though i thought it would attract the audience more.
The web link that i used should of been bigger so the audience could see it more clearer.
The color of the cover lines on the left hand side cashed with the main artists top so it wasn't very clear for the audience to read.
The color scheme wasn't linked together at all which makes it look unfinished and it needed improving.
Contents Page
This is my final product for a contents page for a music magazine
product. I used many elements that a real contents page would use to make it look professional and unique. Even though i wanted to make it look realistic i wanted to put my own twist on it to make it look original and like no other.
Strengths of my Contents Page
I followed most of the typical conventions of a contents page due to the fact that it made it look realistic, but also putting my own twist on it made it unique and like no other 'products'.
For my contents page i used more information then images because of the audience needing to read what is on each page, this is beneficial because the only thing the audience should focus on is the main artists featured on the contents page.
Changing the layout of the word 'contents' to make it look more funky and unique even though most real products use this technique.
The color scheme i used was all very similar to make it look professional for the audience.
Using the masthead and the web link to the 'website' to benefit the audience with information even more.
Weaknesses of my Contents Page
The two images in the middle have the background erased, i don't think this benefits my contents page because i think it looks messy and tacky, i would have rather had it with the background still on so its neat and clean.
The images are all in black and white purely to suit the color scheme more because of it looking more professional but i think it would have brightened up the contents page more by having the images in color.
The spaces between the writing make it look empty and UN-interesting to look at, if i wrote more and used less space it would look more busy and excitable.
Should have used more colors to make it look more exciting.
Double Page Spread
This is my double page spread, I think this is the one i struggled with the most due to the columns and making it look realistic and different also from other media products. Even though i completed it and made it look the best i could i still think it had a lot to improve to make it look better. Strengths
The image that I used was very 'playful' which i believed show the audience the funny side of the artists which made my magazine more fun and unique, another reason as well was because a double page spread is an article about the artists and what they're like and i believe that the picture did it justice.
I used a quote from the artists on the image to make the audience want to read the whole article.
I used a banner saying 'EXCLUSIVE' so the audience would want to read the article as well as the quote i used.
I kept the colour scheme the same as the double page spread so it look professional, using the colours purple to pinks.
The title i used on the top of the article (The decks, the tunes and the making of DL) where i faded the colours going from dark to light and i think it was unique from any other magazine as they only use single bold colours other than a fading technique.
Weaknesses
I used the main image on the double page spread as myself and i didn't think it looked good due to me being self conscious.
I think i put to much information on the double page spread and it got to the point where it looked a bit tacky with the different colours, font sizes and layouts.
On the other half of the page i think that the different font and 'boldness' made it look unprofessional to the reader/audience.
I think it would have look better if i did the questions in the article a different colour so the audience could see the difference between the question and the answer.
For this task I analysed a front cover, notifying myself with the different elements that a make a successful one (masthead, main image, cover lines and anchorage text etc). I think this helped me because of me starting to learn about the different components that make a good front cover but also knowing the different key terminology so it helped me in the long run with my own product. For this i think it will help me because of what audiences want and what they expect to see in a front cover or whatever media product is made. For the future tasks this research would help me with the different technologies and terminology that i would use in the long run and also in future tasks.
Different mastheads and graphic designs- Music Magazine
For this task i needed to decide on what i wanted my masthead to look like fitting in with the other components of my magazine also. This task helped me decide on what i wanted to use, but also with this i had to research audience and what i needed to do to make the front cover look realistic. Through audience research i think it helped me to gain more knowledge on what other media businesses do to make they're magazine look good even though it is realistic. By looking at other products with different mastheads i think most mastheads suited the music genre of the magazine but also if it had colour using it to link in with any other colour that is used on the front cover e.g. main image, cover lines. Overall i think this was a strength for me because of it giving me a better and clearer idea of what i wanted my masthead to look like, it helped with choosing the name, the colour and also the font. Without the research that i did i wouldn't of been as confident using it on my media magazine product.
Analysis of Contents Page/ Mood Board
I analysed a contents page and began research into what elements are used to make it suit the genre i have chosen but also what is usually seen and included. I think this task was a strength for me due to the fact that i knew what needed to be included and what effect it has on the reader e.g. Images, colour scheme, layout, the titles used and the people/ celebrities used. This made me consider my colour scheme, images and layout the most because of me wanting it to suit the genre that i had chosen. It made me want to analyse different media products in a way where it would help me and make my work improved, but also to help me consider why certain components are used in different media products and how it is effective. By looking at different contents pages and bringing them together it helped me decide what i wanted my own media product to look like by looking at every music genre.
Audience Feedback Questionnaire
For this i created a questionnaire on survey monkey with 10 questions, this was for my research about my music magazine. The survey included questions like 'how much would you pay for a music magazine?' and 'what is the best name to call my music magazine?' (Which they were given options) when the results were in i posted them on my blog. I didn't think this helped me because there wasn't enough people who completed the questionnaire so it was difficult to get an accurate answer or audience feedback, i didn't think this was going to help me because i didn't think my magazine product would suit the target audience because there wasn't many people who answered it. For this year i made a questionnaire and got more feedback due to more people answering it and the help from my teacher emailing all of the staff.
1. How creative do you think you were in the decisions you made when creating your coursework?
There are many conventions audiences expect to see on a magazine cover. I needed to do research into these to figure out how i could make my magazine unique and creative. The conventions that are seen on all magazine covers were:
A masthead (Which is catchy)
Main image
Basic colour scheme to draw the audience in and catch there eye e.g. bright colours
Cover Lines to inform the audience (Puff)
Bar code to make the magazine look realistic
Pull quote to interest the reader
Banner to advertise big events coming up e.g. DJ's playing at specific venues
The price of the magazine
The issue number and date so the reader know which magazine is which.
The use of different shapes and fonts to have a contrast
With my music magazine i had to produce and front cover, double page spread and contents page. By doing research into what audience expect to see it gave me a starting point to what i would do to mine which made it look good and realistic. I followed most of the typical conventions for my magazine because of most audiences not liking change to a front cover of a magazine they usually see e.g. the layout, although most conventions are followed due to the fact that it makes the product look professional and realistic. Not many magazines challenge these conventions we see because of it working well but also using a traditional way, but in some cases magazine challenge conventions because of working for they're specific audience and therefore in the long run being successful. For my front cover i feel like i challenge the usual conventions of what you would usually see in a house magazine because of using bright colours and an unusual layout, what you would usually see on a front cover is one main image and then cover lines and puffs to inform the audience where as for my magazine i used for pictures than information to have a difference and uniqueness to my front cover. In the long run many changes where made to my front cover because of me not liking my layout and me not being realistic to my product. I was not happy with the visual syntax on my front cover due to there being to much space and i think my audience needed to be informed with more cover lines other than just images. 2. Did the technology enhance your creativity or not? 3. What ideas did you communicate and what stylistic techniques did you use? how did it relate to your interests/vision for your music magazine?
I wanted to create a front cover that was modern and stylistic. I researched into many different fonts and images that i would use to suit what i wanted my magazine front cover to look like. I had to think about many components to make my magazine look modern and stylised:
Font
Masthead
Images
Cover Lines
Colour Scheme
Layout
The font that I chose was very modern and fresh, i think that the font that i had chosen suited my audience and also suited the genre of house music. The font was used throughout the 3 products i created so they all matched and looked professional.
The masthead was the most important thing for me as its the first thing the audiences see but also being the name of a magazine which audiences usually remember. I named my magazine MUZIK as it was a modern way to say 'MUSIC' which was a twist that would give my magazine an edge that no other magazine would have. I chose a font that was different a made the word look more modern, i also chose a hot pink yo contrast with the black writing and also the colours used on the front cover. This was the masthead I used:
The images that I took were made to look stylistic opposed to a realistic picture, I had many troubles with the images that i have used due to the fact that i used myself and i was very self conscious of my product. Throughout creating my product i changed my main image quite a lot. For my final product i chose an image where the 'artists' where looking directly at the camera because it followed a typical convention of a music magazine. I also used different filters on my images to make it look different and to almost have a contract between them all.
The cover lines, layout and colour scheme changed a lot throughout my magazine because of my opinion changing. The different techniques I used was using different colours to have a contrast and not have everything matching due to my 'genre' of house music against the different images and cover lines etc. At first i wanted my layout to be unique by using more images then cover lines because of it being a new fresh, modern way but i changed the style near the end of completing my product because of it not suiting usual genre conventions you would see in a magazine layout (need to inform the audience other than show them). I wanted the cover lines on my magazine all to be different but in similar colours and the same font, due to the fact that it would look messy otherwise. 4. Was your product influenced by your social environmental (e.g. your interests?)
The music genre that i chose was house music. The reason i chose this music genre is because I listen to house music and know about all the artists within this genre. By this i knew what audiences wanted to see from a magazine front cover due to my age and the audience feedback i received. With me being a young adult i think it helped be a lot in what i wanted my magazine to look like but also what people expected from a magazine. I think it influenced my product because of the different decisions i made e.g. the image, costume, colour scheme and the cover lines i wrote (knowing about artists and different events). 5. Was this original or did you add something extra to your original media text?
My final product followed to closely with an original media product, but the first front cover i produced was my own idea with everything original to what i wanted but throughout research i changed my mind because of it not being realistic enough and not fitting in with the conventions you would usually see. I decided to change a couple of components of my front cover like layout, images and cover lines. I think i changed my layout the most because i wanted it to look realistic and professional, from my first product to my final product there was a lot of differences that was made. I think that i made these changes for the better because of me being happy and content with what i produced.
6. Would you take any creative skills into future projects or have you been influenced to engage these skills in any other projects? I think overall i have been influenced by different programmes, technologies and also different techniques. This is because at the start of the year i didn't know a lot about techniques that you could use to make something look good e.g. on fireworks the erasing tool so your main image (artists) where in front of your masthead. Also another thing that had a big influence to make me conscious was using my self on my magazine throughout, didn't think it helped my work look good because of me being conscious.
The idea seemed easy to make and adapt to, we thought the initial idea was interesting and liked the fact that the film would confuse our audience. Our specific audience would most likely enjoy and engage with the film as our target audience is 15-25 year olds. The location that it was based around was university/school, so would be easier and more efficient to work around school and less time thinking about the locations we should use. Another reason why we chose this idea is because our audiences may be able to relate to the content of our film and our characters. Plus the genre is different to other trailers, films and ideas. The idea can also be applied to younger audiences because of them being more likely to go to the cinema and spend money on watching the latest film. Also with this age group it can be more related to school, apprentiships and jobs due to the main character going through the same thing. The idea also involves a relationship between two best friends which can be applied to young girls of the same age. As the genre is a psychological thriller it includes a type of mystery and i think audiences like to see that the most in films but also the excitement that comes with watching the film.
Semantic Elements:
Urban/modern settings, props such as mirrors and stairs to create confusion, low key lighting, shadows, fast-paced editing, everyday costumes, tense and eerie music, cliques/stereotypes, school setting/houses of characters/the mall, drinking, rebellion, partying, sex, drugs, alcohol smoking, social hierarchy.
Syntactic Elements:
Ending that ties loose ends together or perhaps an ending with a twist, see characters progress throughout the story, conflict, complications, confusion between fantasy and reality, good vs bad, gradual breakdown, teens vs adults, usually a new person comes to school and is seen as an outsider, relationship problems, conflicts between cliques.
Exam
question 1(B) - Theoretical Evaluation of a Product Formal Assessment 1: Genre
1(B)
Robert Stam states that “genre is hard to define”. Analyse a recent film
trailer of your choice in relation to the concept of genre.
With
the statement that Robert Stam states about “genre being hard to define” I
don’t feel that I agree with these because of there being many different ranges
of genres in the film industry and all of them are specifically different other
than two different genres being merged together e.g. Rom-com (romance and
comedy). By defining all of the genres it gives a difference between all the
films that are made but also reaches out to many specific different types of
audiences. The genre that I have chosen to look at is high school/teen movies,
the basic genre conventions that we see of a high school movie include:
Arguments (drama), parties, drinking, different social groups (cliques), teen
Vs adults and a type of rebellion. I think these are the basic genre
conventions of a high school movie because most that are made involves this
type of behaviour or event. The film that I have chosen to look at is twilight
with it involving many different genres and involving a high school outline.
With
twilight having many different genres they involve different conventions, the
main genres for twilight is drama, romance and fantasy. The genre conventions
for a drama is intense social realism, many conflicts, audience being
emotionally attached and moved and ‘real life situations’ with ‘realistic
characters’ but with the film being focused on fantasy (vampire) it is seen to
challenge this specific type of genre convention. With twilight having 3 sub
genres there second genre used is romance the main genre conventions of this
genre are that it is aimed at female audiences, ‘boy meets girl’ scenario, the
‘happy ever after’ and the heroes tending to be men with this genre being easy
to define many romance films use the same genre conventions being between two
people. The third genre is fantasy with twilight being based on vampires there
are many different conventions of this type of genre e.g. positive narrative
outcomes, simplistic, emotive (usually romance) and also this type of genre
having an obsessive fan base which is true seeing that twilight was so successful
that they picked up a huge fan base e.g. Team Edward and Team Jacob.
Being
that I could find and name the many different genre conventions of the 3 types
it is typically right and easy to define in relation to Robert Stam saying
“genre is hard to define”. But with the different genres that are used for the
film “twilight” they are easy to recognise by key events that happen and how
they are recognised by the audience. Rick Altman’s Theory can be related to
this because of the semantic and syntactic elements, this is key to how genre
can be approached semantic elements in a film is all of the props, characters,
locations, music and shooting style (camera) you can define this by looking at
a genre type e.g. sci-fi, involving time travel, aliens, on other planets,
spaceships, laser guns etc. But with the syntactic elements of a genre this can
involve what we would expect to see in this type of genre but also the
structure of narratives within the genre e.g. in a romantic comedy we would
expect to see potential lovers becoming to not like each other, this can be
seen in the film ‘Friends with Benefits’. This can be another approach in
disagreeing with Robert Stam’s statement that genre is hard to define, by
looking at both semantic and syntactic elements it gives us an impression of
any genre that we make when we go and see the film and what it includes.
Looking
at the trailer for ‘twilight’ you see that there are many conventions of a
typical trailer but also showing the audience what type of genre conventions
the film uses. The typical conventions of a trailer are fast pace cuts, the use
of a soundtrack to draw you in, key points from the film but not a lot, the
name of the film (usually at the end), the date its coming out etc. By having a
trailer for films it gives the audience a teaser of what the full film might be
like and the genre that is used for the film so the audience can relate and
want to go and see it. The first thing that we see in the trailer is the use of
soundtrack to suit the type of genre the film is which is very intriguing but
also spooky to suit the ‘vampire’ type genre. The trailer is very dark and
mysterious with dark shots with spooky lit font, with the soundtrack also it
gives the audience a representation of what the film is going to be like. The
trailer for the audience starts of slow paced to build up the tension and then
typically a trailer gets faster and faster to excite the audience. Then the
trailer begins to show the audience scenes from the film where the editing uses
fast cuts and uses fade outs and dissolve to again suit the genre of being
fantasised. The company is shown before the pace gets faster to show the
audience who distributed, made and produced the film to remember the name of
the company. The trailer then shows quotes to intrigue the audience like
‘nothing will be the same’ and ‘forever begins now’ to like the fact that it is
about vampires and they are eternal until they are called. When the trailers
pace begins to speed up the trailer uses more relevant events that happen
within the film to attract the audience and make them want to go and see it. By
showing important scenes from the film it gives a general idea of what the film
is going to be like. The soundtrack changes and then begins to make soundtracks
over the clips from the film to suit what happens to create even more of an
atmosphere.
The
trailer then speeds the pace up by faster music to create more excitement, but
also showing close up shots, zoom and also slow paced cuts to contrast with the
fast soundtrack. By the trailer creating a type of intensifying climax for the
audience it makes the film seem better than it is but to create a buzz for the
film. The trailer focuses on the two main characters and an outline story of
what happens to give the audience a type of recognition to show the best parts
of the film to make the audience want to go and see the film even more.
After
these typical conventions happen the trailer is at its top pace and then starts
to show the audience how the film came about by having a shot that says ‘from
the worldwide best seller’ to make the film seem even more exciting. But also
noticing the clue filter that is put on the trailer to make the film seem cold
(like a vampire) but in the film the filter is seen throughout to keep the
constant emotion all the way through. When the trailer comes to an end it is
very dramatic while the soundtrack changes to a big bang noise then viewing the
name of the film to make the audience feel excited or reluctant at what the
film is going to be like. The date is seen at the start and the end of the film
to make the audience remember when it’s going to come out which creates even
more of a ‘buzz’. The mis-en-scene of the film is very basic and normal, with
basic costumes on the characters who are students at a high school, but also
the different locations being the complete opposite with high trees and
mountains to suit the ‘vampire’ array.
With this it is seen to stretch the boundaries of a high school film
with a vampire twist which is now seen as a modern classic. The film is
stretching the boundaries because it is shown to suit a much younger audience;
it is set in high school, young students but involving romance and thriller
moments in the film.
With
the film being about high school students with a vampire twist the trailer
shows that perfectly by picking out key ‘remember able’ moments e.g. Edward
saving Bella from being hit by a car where he gets in the way and dents the
side of the door. Which is the starting key moment of how she figures out he is
a vampire. With trailer doing this it shows the audience what the film has to
offer but also the excitement of the film being different by involving
vampires, romance and drama all at the same time and is probably why the film
is seen to be a classic.
In
conclusion to this question I think that genre is very important involving the
making of a film because of the audience’s purpose by being excited about the
film where twilight is a key example by stretching the boundaries and because
of this making the film so successful. I think the film makers made the genre
very clear to the audience by involving key events off the film to give the
audience an accurate idea of what the film is going to be like. If the trailer
didn’t use any clips from the film the audience wouldn’t have an idea of what
the film is like and what it involves which won’t make audiences want to go and
see it. In my opinion I think that genre is very important and is needed for a
film to be different from the rest that are made, without all the different
genres all films would be the same and there wouldn’t be a variation which
would jeopardise the film industry, audiences like change and a difference in
film for them to become so successful. I do not agree with Stam’s statement
because of genre having different conventions and without this every film would
be boring. There needs to be a difference in the film industry for audiences to
go and see the film e.g. some sequels are not as successful as the first one
because it’s the same type of genre and basic outline. But without genre many
films would not be successful and I think Robert Stam’s statement is un true
because of the amount of genres out there in the industry and why loads of
films are being made to stretch the boundaries of different genres or to become sub-genres.
Genre: Teen movie/High school movie Plot: A new male teacher has began a new job at the school, he is from america. He starts teaching a maths class at the beginning of a new year and a student called Bonnie who is one of the most popular girls in school and also the prettiest, but struggles with maths and not exactly one of the most clever in her class or year. The head of maths requests the new teacher to give her extra help and support. The next time they have a maths class, he decides to tell her that she needs to come to extra support lessons to improve on her maths, she forcefully agrees and walks off at the end of the lesson. When it come to the end of school she is needed to go to the extra help lessons, they begin to start the lesson and she isn't very interested but more interested in looking at herself in the mirror. When the new teacher starts to get frustrated he takes the mirror and phone of her until the support lesson is finished. She begins to be very agitated and refuses to learn more so he lets her go being the spoilt student she is. The next day she doesn't have maths and is still angry at what happened the day before so she decides to take revenge and go to the headteacher and say that he touched her in a sexual way/manner. The headteacher took immediate action and decided to call the police and get the teacher suspended with no pay until proven, this effected him as he had young children and needed to pay for them. He then waited for Bonnie one day to tell her how much he needed his job back to pay for his family and guilt tripped her into confessing to the police that she made it up. After getting his job back as the maths teacher he began teaching Bonnie in one to one sessions after school every week, he did this for a few weeks until one week he decided to change what he was doing. He made sure no one was in the school building as it was late in the evening before closing the blinds and forcing himself on to her even through her resistance. He then whispered to her that no one will believe you now. She ran home and got into the shower in pain and was terrified. She didn't mention what had happened for weeks to anyone but she struggled to sleep so she had many sleeping pills and she struggled getting through the day sober and drinking every night along side her sleeping pills. One night she ended up taking an overdose of pills as she wasn't sleeping after taking one. Her mom came into her and called the hospital straight away and got her rushed into the emergency room. Bonnie managed to survive but this experience let her realize that she needed to tell someone about what the teacher had done before something like this happened to her again. Her best friend started having one to one sessions with the same teacher and Bonnie became worried, so told her about it, but her friend didn't believe her. Bonnie then googled the teachers name and his name came up on a wanted list for pedophilia and he had been on the run in america for months before coming to England to start a new life. Bonnie showed her friend immediately and they went straight to the police with this information. But when the police went to the teachers house to question him, he wasn't there and the whole house was empty. The police searched for days with no luck before he turned up and pulled Bonnie into an ally, he grabbed her and was pulling her around screaming in her face saying he was going to kill her. he drags her to his car to take her away before an off guard police officer sees them in the distance and..... - BONNIE TELLS MANY TEACHERS BUT DON'T BELIEVE HER - HE WAS CAUGHT AND CONVICTED (WENT TO PRISON FOR LIFE) - HIS SHOWS BONNIE PICTURE OF FAMILY BUT ITS A FAKE FAMILY

The story involves typical character types aimed at a younger audience with the characters being 13 and above. Being in school you usually have two best friends who do everything together with a psychological thriller there is usually a different take on films by messing with the audience e.g. Shutter island but with the character types theres usually a hero, victim, villain and within a psychological thriller most of these types are seen. Lots of stages of disequilibrium being a psychological thriller because it creates tension, drama and also helps the audience be on the edge of there seats but also creates twists and turns in the story. Strauss involves the binary opposites, in a psychological thriller we have life VS death. good VS evil and also male VS female of how the story unfolds. If we didn't have conflicts a psychological thriller must be boring. Potential locations: school, therapy, 'party house', the two girls house.

Then genre of our film will be a high school drama, vampire and psychological thriller. The main target audience we are aiming from our product is 15-25 as a primary audience. This is because of the content in our film that we are going to use e.g. Blood and Bad Language- this would not be appropriate for the people under the age of 15. Our product will be aimed males and females reason being because of the genres that we are using (Psychological Thriller) which can appeal to both genders. For example: The film Twilight is classed as the teen and vampire genre, which features both boys and girls and does not involve or focus on just the one gender. The film that we are planning to create can mostly appeal to British people as characters that are going to be involved are British, the audience are able to relate to the characters more being that the conventions of what we are creating are different to other ethnicity's e.g British School is different to the American school that we see in films etc. Our audience linked with JICNAR- can link to 15-25 old's that have disposable income. These are in the group D&E with our age group being in education and may having jobs, if your lower down in the scale it has a limitation about spending money because people around that age don't have bills or other important things to spend on. We have got to encourage the audience to go and see our film because of there disposable income and can want to see the film and want to spend there money on going to see it, it may put pressure on our trailer to make it look good because of the JICNAR Scale. My secondary target audience may be relatives, siblings and parents because of their relationship with the primary target audience so as a result the secondary target audience will have different demographics between 26 and over. The JICNAR scale being anything between A to E. People between 15 to 18 are mostly going to be in education, and 18 over more likely to have a job or e at university which makes it more likely for them to go to the cinema or buy a film or being kept up to date with the latest movies that are coming out.
